Nussbaum

In this reading Nussbaum talks about human life, and the central human capabilities. These capabilities in her mind should be practiced by all human beings if they wanted to practice them. In other words she believes that being human you have the right to carry out any or all of these central human capabilities. She also explains why some people won’t carry out some of these capabilities and a good reason she provides is if a religion prohibits that. Like Rawl she believed that all people should be treated equally and the government should not discriminate between its citizens. She believes that as humans having these capabilities or rights as I may think of them help differentiate us from all other species. For example, you don’t see horses with such capabilities. Also being human we can do far more things for example imagination and thought, practical reasoning. All these capabilities make us human. They help in defining human beings from all other plants and animals. These capabilities somewhat remind me of the bill of rights and how it protects our right to freedom and liberty. They are basic human rights any person should be able to pursue. Again she agrees with Rawls idea of having a government that allows its people to run it. In a way that the citizens should be the ones to decide how their government is run. They should be able to vote for laws they want in action. If they live in a government they don’t have a voice in, are they being treated as human beings?
