Does the First Amendment protect religion from the state or the state from religion?

After reading the passage by Carter, I see that the First Amendment in a lot of way protects the state from religion. The state has more to it than the religion does in being effected by the other. A state can be affected by religious views if they were out in the open and no banned to be practiced in public places. Whereas a religion really doesn’t have much to be changed if a state affected it. Religion has more based facts and beliefs that I don’t believe just any one can change. With a state though, there are much beliefs, order and principle that can change or be affected if a religion were to influence its way of life and laws.
For example, if a religion was taught at a public school the state would be affected more than the religion would. This is because the religion is just being taught, nothing about it will really change other than the fact that a lot of students might turn to it in the long run. As for the state its views on society will change having a religion influence a group of kids can have a huge impact on them. When the government forbids religion to be taught in public schools and other public funded places, it is trying to protect the state as for the people in it. Also, if a religion where to be practiced in a state a lot of controversial issues would arise and in a way our society would fall apart along with its government. Every man and women have their own beliefs and no one should infer with the religion of another’s.
